When Reality Sucks
There is a motorcycle consignment shop here in town and we stop in once in a while sniffing around for deals. They have a nice selection of low mileage, late model chrome wagons and some fairly good prices if you are looking for that sort of thing. Pretty nice evo FXR in there now actually. Anyway, they've taken to parking this behemoth out front to grab attention. Boy, does it. A quick google of "American Idol Chopper" brings up a bunch of results for David Cook and this bike. I couldn't stand to read about it in much detail. Point is, it's now at a two-wheeled pawn shop in our stupid town. The idea of a AI theme bike really brings together two of the worst things in recent American culture in a splendid interstices of opulent mediocrity.

May 29-30, 2009: Biltwell S24ON #2
Bill's first Sub 24-hour Overnighter was such a success, I've organized one of my own. Here's the plan:
Dates: Friday, May 29 & Saturday, May 30, 2009
Jump-off point: Biltwell HQ, Temecula, CA
Destination: Salton Sea Recreation Area
Itinerary:
Friday:
12:00 noon—lunch at Hard Hats in Temecula (next door to Biltwell HQ)
1:00 pm to 5:00 pm—ride to Indio; meet Riverside and LA county posse at corner of 46th and Indio Blvd.
5:30 to 6:00—ride to campground; pitch a tent
7 'till whenever—drunken dumbness
Saturday:
Morning—wake up, check out, ride home
Everyone who wishes to come on this ride must make his own arrangements for camping. Click here for info and online reservations. There's a two-vehicle max limit per camp space, so if there are five riders in your posse, you'll need three spaces (2, 2, and 1—easy.)
Here's the route we're taking out of Temecula after lunch on Friday.

How we come home is anyone's guess. The Google map link above will give you some good ideas for a return route.

Baywatch: Trikes
Man, no one is more of a weirdo than the dude who rocks a trike. I gotta admit, I could see me and the ol lady cruising the streets in a V-Dub-powered whisky barrel, poppin' wheelies and having fun. Damn thing would take up the whole garage though, wouldn't it? Someday, maybe when I'm all old and crippled up it'd be cool. In the meantime I'll just check a couple out on eBay once in a while and wonder to myself just what the hell these guys were thinking.

Uno What?
More glimpses into the future? It's neat that this thing could come from the mind and wrenches of a 19-year old. Mostly hyperbolic dreams in search of development money, but you can't deny it's cool. Can you see a pack of these tearing around the Glen Helen MX track? No, me neither. Can you see one with a king and queen seat, tall sissy bar and a flaked Wassell? Doubt that too. Put some apes on it, bro! My computers crash more often than my bikes break, so it scares me to think of riding something that relies on computer-controlled gyroscopes to remain balanced. Anyway, thought it was cool to read about nonetheless. Thanks Eric W., for the tip.

This is what I want:
In my opinion, Deus Ex Machina's W650 is the rolling embodiment of two-wheeled perfection. If my CB450 project—whose parts return from the painter, the plater, and the motor rebuilder next week—goes together like I've envisioned, it should be pretty damned cool. Win or lose, a number of great people have helped me build my street tracker, and I thank them. You can see how this project germinated here.

Bromantic Get-Away
Keith had the idea last month for a quick trip on bikes and left the destination up to me. I'm sick of riding into the desert, so this time we hit the beach. McGoo and I left early yesterday morning and rode over Ortega to Laguna Beach where we met most of the guys. Up PCH to Costa Mesa where we grabbed a couple more. From there, Long Beach, over the bridge into San Pedro and finally had our first trouble. Balls had just put a new gennie and battery in his bike the night before, but the high-end gel battery was junk out of the box. Luckily we were close to Tim's shop, Century Motorcycles on Pacific, so we popped in there. I've wanted to visit this shop for a long time, so this was a good excuse. Awesome place, and Tim was super helpful. The generator tested out OK, but the battery just wouldn't hold a charge. Tim gave Balls some scrap jumper cables and off we went. Thanks Tim! Lunch in Venice Beach with JD, Caleb and Matt getting added to the mix was cool. Only in Venice would you watch a dude dressed like a tree walk across the street on stilts. We tried to jump the ironhead with a massive body builder's SUV. That was fun but wouldn't get it going, so Balls finally had to break down and pop for a new one. Once that was in, it was up the coast for a lane-splitting marathon through afternoon traffic. Caleb knew the best route up through the hills on Kannan and back down to the beach. I love riding with this dude! I swear he can bunnyhop that shovel. Leo Carrillo campground was sweet. We loaded up a bunch of beer in town, ordered pizza delivered (roughing it!) and just when we ran out of twigs and twelve pack cartons to burn, Moeller showed up with a truck full of firewood and a fearsome thirst. His bike broke a few miles from home, but he wasn't giving up, and I'm glad he came. We needed the wood and his fireside chats are legendary. Anyway, thanks to Keith for having the idea and shooting these pics. And thanks to all my bros who put their knees in the breeze with full outlaw spirit!
