Sub24ON: Salton Sea

McGoo nailed it. This trip was a great idea. Eleven of us ended up going. Total time was about 27 hours. Just under 500 miles of riding. Some highway, mostly two-lane stuff. Borrego, Julian, Warner Springs, all around the Salton Sea. Bombay Beach bar with the optimistic name: the "Ski Inn" was perfect. Rich bought a can of Fish Asholes to remember the occasion. Nobody crashed. Two mechanical failures towards the end. Keith brought his big camera so I expect some higher quality images later in the week. I shot well over a hundred riding photos and got a handful that were useable. How does Kurpius do it? FXR was flawless, I love this bike.

Salvation Mountain and Slab City today was worth the whole trip. It's hard to get a sense for the scale of this place. How does this frail old guy move heavy ass hay bails around, especially the really high ones? I felt kinda bad there at first, like we were celebrating this dude's obviously crippled mind. Then, after talking with him it was clear that he loves what he's doing and he's happier than most. Slab City is just like the stories describe. Post apocolyptic, martial law desert kibutz. You wanna disappear for a while? You can do it here, that's for sure. Big stage at one joint there with live music every Saturday night. Musicians play for tips. I smell a big party here in the fall once it cools down...

Thanks to everyone that went!

I shot some photos of the trip. I'll post 'em tomorrow. Murray's sprocket bolts laid down on his 100 miles from home on day two. We watered him down and our fallen brother called triple A for help (or was it his super cool chick?) Glad everyone had a good time. Thanks for coming, gents.

Riki your trip looks insane. We camped at a state park north of bombay beach. Next time it's slab city man, that place was the twilight zone.
