You're Doing It Wrong

Sacred Steel Knuck

So we had a chance to give up some parts for a TV show pilot about two shops building theme bikes against each other. I know, I know, how lame was all that stuff the first time around? But Cary is a Douche Laroucher and the guys at Sacred Steel Cycles aren't exactly those OCC clowns.

We talked big plans of delivering the parts with a pony and a midget and all this funny stuff. In the end we just loaded them in Cary's truck and called it a day. The parts got auctioned off at a pre-filming party at their shop and that helped fund the build.

The pipes were crafted with the Biltwell Builder's Pipe Kit and came out bitchin'.

The shops were given themes of WW2 airplanes: SSC got the Corsair and the other dudes got a Japanese Zero. When will TV asshats realize that bike themes are retarded and just do a show where hot girls in short skirts build motorcycles while being hosed down with baby oil? Anyway, the SSC guys nailed a great looking bike without doing the whole over the top theme bike with machine guns and nonsense all over it. From what I hear the producers liked the antics at the shop enough to talk about some more projects together. Great, now the Douche Larouche is going to be famous, just what the world needs.

Thanks for letting us pitch in guys, and next time I promise we'll bring the pony.

Get your Sportster On!

Lifted from QCB.

From a storied history of semi-secret annual gatherings of friends on a beer soaked Carolina back porch to a muddied Ohio campground comes the second installment of a new tradition. Moved to the dryer climate of Texas, the tomfoolery. jackassery, and sophomoric shennanigans once reserved solely for the private gatherings of the Quad Cam Bastards club members are once again available for public participation.

The second annual BASTARD BASH is open to any and all home builders with a commitment to building and riding Harley Davidson Sportster / Buell-powered choppers. Our event will be held October 16-18, 2009 in Hico, Texas. HOME BUILT SPORTSTERS ONLY. (Everyone is welcome and stock bikes are allowed but may be be berated, belittled, beaten with their own festoonery or forced to park in the not-cool section.)

A prepaid cover charge of 20 bucks gets you in, pays for your camping spot, and buys your first donation to the community beer and food fund. This charge helps pay for our two-day private property rental - we're not out to make money on this!

This event is what "motorcycle events" are becoming again: A gathering of friends and like-minded individuals for the purpose of celebrating the machine - NOT a made-for-TV ticket to a lifestyle-for-a-weekend, complete with contrived scheduled events and scripted photo opportunities to freak out the squares back at the office on Monday.

The Bastard Bash will be what we make it. Good times, chopped sportsters, and great friends. Riding, wrenching, and laughing until we pass out under the stars.

Disclaimer: We'll allow NO cheezy vendors of do-rags, cheap leather vests, helmet stickers, turkey legs, or five-dollar beers. We'll cater to NO corporate agendas. We'll stage NO "lifestyle" moments, perform no circus tricks, and invite no Hollywood camera crews. We are not responsible for any lost limbs, serious head injuries, or liver damage.

Be there or be square.

Slow Burn

I miss my old Triumph. It wasn't the best long haul bike, but it sure was fun in traffic and on the lonely twisties. My FXR fits the bill when it's time for big trips, so I have a bike for that mission. The 45 has been a fun long term project, but it's about done and I'm ready for another one. The last few bikes have been mild makeovers, not ground-up projects. The last three bikes have also been just basic black. Time for something more colorful and funky, and I can't deny my inclination towards the symmetry of a well-done Trumpet.

Craigslist turned up a solid '65 donor engine/trans earlier this week, and it's in the back of the van now, just begging to be the heart of a real motorcycle again. I collected a bunch of reference pics tonight, cruising through 120+ pages of the "Best Triumph Customs" on the Journal. I put them into a set on Flickr. 105 pages of righteous British iron and all it's done is confound me. I have a Wassel banana tank that I've been hording for a while, and I was thinking 18" rear, 21" front. After collecting photos, most of my favorite bikes either have stock tanks or are pre-units. Some of the best even have 45 springers (God forbid!). The only thing I'm sure of is the color, it's got to be HOK Lime Gold. Onward, into the breach!

Favorite Reference Bikes...

Toast to MARK UDELL

Sunday is the day everyone should toast to MARK UDELL (and to those of you at Don and Myrna's on Sunday God Bless You!!!!)

Sunday May 3rd is the day we celebrate Mark and to all who knew him,
he is here with and in all of us.
I have been e-mailing this out every year as a token gesture and I am throwing it out
there again that at 3pm okc time
everyone wherever you may be raise up and toast to Mark. I'm gonna go
with Negro Modelo this year but
you may pick a Car Bomb, Red Stripe, Fosters, Sierra Nevada, Sake or whatever
else you ever had
with Mark, he loved them all.
Today you should eat well as Mark loved food of all kinds.
Maybe some german food or sushi, if you are in norman or with in reach
of it go to the greek house. If you have a board, go skate something,
anything! If you have a motorcycle take a ride for Mark!
Today enjoy The Pogues, Van Halen, The Who, The Clash, X, Bad Brains, J.F.A., Big Boys,
Led Zepplin, GI¹s etc. you know what he liked. Play it loud and play it late!!!

Pass this on to everyone you know in his memory.

"Irish Car Bomb" recipe if you need it.
1/2 pint Guinness
1 oz Jamison
1/2 oz Bailey's Irish cream

Pour Guiness into a pint glass. Float Baileys on top of Jamison in
shot glass. Drop shot glass, carefully, into Guiness. Drink quickly
before it curdles.

An Irish Funeral Prayer

Death is nothing at all.
It does not count.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
Everything remains as it was.
The old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged.
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.
Call me by the old familiar name.
Speak of me in the easy way which you always used.
Put no sorrow in your tone.
Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was.
Let it be spoken without effort
Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was.
There is unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around
the corner.
All is well. Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost.
One brief moment and all will be as it was before.
How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting, when we meet again.

Rat bikes are SO hot right now...

Anyone browse with their iPhone?

So, we are thinking about doing a mobile version of this site so it is more compatible with phones like the iPhone, G-1, Blackberry, etc. It's basically a stripped down, faster loading clone of this site with just the blog, basic product pages and contact info. It's not cheap or easy, so we're wondering if it's worth it. The site would automatically detect whether you are on a mobile device or not and direct you to the proper site.

Since you guys read the blog and interact with the site we thought it might be wise to ask. Does anyone care if there is a mobile site or not? Let us know in the comments section. Thanks!
